Lectuur: “The Princess Diaries ” (1-5) van Meg Cabot

Ik was eerlijk gezegd wel wat verbaasd toen ik The Princess Diaries in de lijst van The Big Read zag staan, zij het op plaats 99. Maar bon, ge leest een lijst of ge leest ze niet, en ik wilde wel eens iets luchtigs. Euhm, luchtig is wel het woord, ja. Of vederlicht. Of “het is weggewaaid als ge even vergeet te kijken”. Maar ik zou er niet de eerste vijf boeken van na elkaar gelezen hebben, als het ook niet onderhoudend zou zijn.

De premisse is heel simpel: Mia Thermopolis is een New-Yorkse tiener die bij haar alleenstaande moeder woont. Haar vader doet iets in Europa, in een klein staatje stijl Monaco. En dan blijkt vaderlief door een kankerbehandeling steriel te zijn, is zij zijn enige – onwettige – kind en is zij de troonopvolger van Genovia. Met alle gevolgen van dien.

Het verhaal is dus geschreven in dagboekstijl vanuit het standpunt van een veertienjarige doodgewone tiener met vrienden, een crush, een grootmoeder die zich te veel moeit, een school waarvoor ze harder moet werken dan ze zou willen, dat soort dingen. Allemaal heel herkenbaar, heel verteerbaar, zonder nadenken, en best wel komisch, ja.

Ga ik de rest nog lezen? Goh… er is een grens aan mijn tolerantie voor vederlichte dingen, maar soms heeft een mens daar ook eens nood aan. Maar om dit nu in die top 100 te zetten? Boaf.

Lectuur: “Magician: Master (The Riftwar Saga #2)” van Raymond E. Feist

Blijkbaar worden de boeken 1 en 2 ook als één geheel uitgegeven, en dat is eigenlijk bijzonder logisch, want het verhaal loopt op alle fronten gewoon door. En op alle fronten bedoel ik vrij letterlijk: er is niet alleen meer het verhaal van Pug de leerlingmagiër, er is dat van prins Arutha, dat van Hertog Borric, dat van Tomas… En dan gaat het vooral over de oorlog die ze op verschillende plaatsen aan het voeren zijn tegen de Tsuranni, het volk van een andere wereld waar Pug nu verzeild is geraakt.

Pug is er een slaaf, al vier jaar. Samen met Laurie, een troubadour die ook gevangen is genomen, komt hij in het blikveld van een officier, gelukkig op een positieve manier. Die neemt hen mee naar zijn eigen landgoed, waar hun bestaan als slaaf net iets beter wordt. En dan wordt Pugs magische kracht opgemerkt…

Het een en het ander leidt natuurlijk tot een verhaal van een oorlog tussen twee werelden, waarbij Pug deel uitmaakt van allebei. Er zijn geen goeien en slechten, er zijn vooral politieke intriges aan beide kanten en ook misverstanden. Zo hoort dat. Pug zal die proberen te overstijgen door voor beide werelden het beste te kiezen, al is dat niet de gemakkelijkste weg zonder bloedvergieten.

Tegelijk laat Feist Pug soms tientallen bladzijden achterwege om het verhaal van een van de andere personages te vertellen. Dat al die verhaallijnen uiteindelijk samenkomen, is dan ook geen onverwachte wending.

Waar ik me wel een beetje aan stoorde, is dat alle ‘gewone jongens’ uiteindelijk helden blijken te zijn, dat alles netjes op zijn pootjes terechtkomt, dat iedereen – of toch zo goed als – de liefde vindt en dat de slechterik van dienst ook zijn verdiende loon krijgt. Het is me iets te zoetsappig, maar dat ligt misschien ook wel aan mijn voorkeur voor grimdark fantasy, waarbij de auteurs er niet voor terugdeinzen hun geliefde personages een roemloze dood te laten sterven. Hier deed het me bij momenten denken aan het langgerekte einde van Tolkiens Lord of the Rings, dat ook maar blijft duren met afscheid en dergelijke.

Maar vond ik het goed? Jazeker, ik ben hier gewoon de lastige mens aan het uithangen. Terecht een fantasy klassieker.

BBC-lijst update januari 2023

Ik had het eerder al over de boeken die ik in 2023 gelezen had. Dat waren eigenlijk vooral fantasyboeken, maar toch ook een paar klassiekers. Maar ik ben ook nog steeds onverdroten bezig in die apocriefe BBC-lectuurlijst.

Ook daar heb ik de top 100 van opgezocht, en ik ga er hetzelfde bij doen: vet wat ik al gelezen heb, schuin waarvan ik delen gelezen heb. En dan blijk ik er daar nog steeds maar 66 gelezen te hebben, maar twee extra in 2023. Tsja. Ik ga me eerst door bovenstaande lijst worstelen, en dan aanvullen met The Big Read, ook al is die van 2003. Ik heb nog tijd, me dunkt.

Nog dertig te gaan in de ene lijst, nog 39 te gaan in de andere lijst, en ze beginnen elkaar minder en minder te overlappen. Niet erg, al deze boeken hebben sowieso een zeker niveau en zijn dus lezenswaardig. We doen dapper voort, zou ik zeggen.

BBC-lijst en The Big Read

Ik had het eerder al over de boeken die ik in 2020 gelezen had. Dat waren eigenlijk vooral fantasyboeken, maar toch ook een paar klassiekers.

Vorig jaar in februari postte ik nog eens de apocriefe BBC-lectuurlijst. Toen had ik er 53 van de 100 gelezen, hieronder volgt dus nog eens de jaarlijkse update. Wat ik relatief recent heb gelezen en dus heb besproken, heeft een link naar de bespreking.

Deze lijst is dus gebaseerd, blijkbaar, op een meme. In 2003 was er wél op de BBC “The Big Read”, waarbij lezers op hun favoriete boek mochten stemmen. Ook daar heb ik de top 100 van opgezocht, en ik ga er hetzelfde bij doen: vet wat ik al gelezen heb, schuin waarvan ik delen gelezen heb. En dan blijk ik er daar nog maar 54 gelezen te hebben. Tsja. Ik ga me eerst door bovenstaande lijst worstelen, en dan aanvullen met The Big Read, ook al is die van 2003.

Lectuur: “The Woman in White” van Wilkie Collins

Deze klassieker staat zowel op de apocriefe BBC-lijst en de Big Read, maar ik had daar eigenlijk nog nooit van gehoord.

Ergens terecht, vond ik: ik vind het geen mega goed boek, eigenlijk. Ik hou wel van Victoriaanse lang uitgesponnen verhalen, maar dit was er bij momenten toch een beetje over, vond ik. Dit boek uit 1859 is één van de voorlopers van de gothic novel maar met iets minder dan 700 pagina’s slaagde het er niet altijd in me te blijven boeien. De vorm is nochtans wel goed gevonden: het verhaal begint met het relaas van de jonge Walter Hartwright en hoe hij in Londen, onderweg als tekenleraar naar Laura Fairlie en Marian Halcombe, twee halfzussen op een chique landgoed, een vreemde ontmoeting heeft met een vrouw helemaal in het wit, de dame uit de titel. Walter vertelt verder hoe het hem vergaat op het landgoed van de dames. Op een bepaald moment verdwijnt hij even uit het verhaal, maar krijgen we het dagboek van Miss Halcombe te lezen, waardoor het verhaal quasi naadloos verder verloopt en we al doorkrijgen dat een en ander zeer grondig gaat mislopen.
Het vertelstandpunt meandert van de ene persoon naar de andere, maar eigenlijk krijgen we wel een vrij lineair verhaal met de nodige duistere kantjes. Op een bepaald moment komt zelfs een van de grote slechteriken aan het woord met zijn versie van het verhaal.

Helaas verliest Collins zichzelf af en toe in enorme uitweidingen die het verhaal nodeloos rekken. De verschillende standpunten en karakterschetsen zijn heel knap gedaan en brengen een grote meerwaarde aan het verhaal – dat ik hier, omwille van spoilers en zo, niet uit de doeken doe – maar sommige zijn een beetje overbodig.

Ik heb drie volle weken nodig gehad – toegegeven, in drukke tijden – om het boek uit te krijgen, en dat wil wel wat zeggen voor mij. Aanrader? Goh… als je van Victoriaanse literatuur houdt misschien wel, maar er zijn er die beter geschreven zijn, vind ik persoonlijk. Maar als tijdsdocument is het wel knap.

Oh, en blijkbaar is het al meermaals verfilmd. Daar kan ik eigenlijk wel inkomen, ja.
